I went to Wal-mart to buy a surge protector/power strip. However, each differentiates itself by the amount of energy it can dissipate, ranging from 300 to 2000 Joules. I want to know how this works or if its simply a marketing gimmick.
I’m planning to buy one that will provide power for a 36 inch tube tv, ps3, and a xbox360.

I think you’re confusing a power strip/surge protector with a Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS), which also acts as a surge protector. In the event of a surge or power outage the device instantly switches to a built in battery and transformer to supply power to the item needing power. Once power is restored, it automatically switches back to normal house current. My advice is to check at your local electronic store to have someone help you out with one that is adequate for the load. Good luck.

A surge protector operates by limiting the voltage that can pass through and slowing down a surge or spike and then shunting it to ground. Most of the surge protectors you see are very limited. They usually only have one component to limit any surge and aren’t very effective. They are better than nothing. If you really want to protect your equipment you need to buy a better surge protector. The Tripp Lite Isobar surge protector is one of the better ones available. They can be purchased at many office supply stores, Radio Shack, even Wal Mart. Their link is below for more information.
